Westfield State football team tackles camp project

Westfield State College football players recently volunteered to help prepare the Westfield YMCA’s Camp Shepard for its summer-month outdoor programs.

Approximately 20 players worked six solid hours to spruce up the scenic camp area. They raked leaves in the swimming pool area and along the walking trails of the seven-acre campgrounds.

The leaf raking not only enhanced the landscape but it will be instrumental in limiting bugs during the hot summer days. Other tasks included moving tables and canoes as well as replacing light bulbs in the pavilion areas.

“The players made phenomenal progress; I can’t say enough good things about them,” said on-site director Aaron Bisson. “The camp will be well prepared to open now.”

Camp Shepard, located off Northwest Road several miles from the college, is a summer camp for ages 5 to 12 and typically has an enrollment of 60 children.

“It was a great feeling to give back to the community that has provided us with so much support,” said junior quarterback Dan Cohen.

The community service effort also allowed the players a chance to bond. 

“Not only do we help the community but it gives us a great chance to grow together,” said junior defensive lineman Josh Leger.
