New Student and Parent Orientation 2008 – Session E

Dear New Students and Parents;

Congratulations! Westfield State College and New Student and Parent Orientation welcome you to our campus. During this time of anticipation and new beginnings, our New Student and Parent Orientation Program will help both students and parents learn more about life on our campus. Our programs are overnight sessions beginning at 8:00am on day one and ending at 12:00pm on day two.  The final session is scheduled for August 15-16.  Please register for the program as soon as possible.  Please note:  PHONE RESERVATIONS ARE NOT ACCEPTED FOR THIS PROGRAM. Thank you, in advance, for your quick response!

IMPORTANT UPDATE:  Your academic coursework information letter, course request form and network logon information (with college email address and pin number) was sent out in late spring.  If you have not yet sent in your course request form, please do that immediately.  YOU DO NOT NEED YOUR EMAIL INFORMATION TO SEND IN YOUR ORIENTATION REGISTRATION REQUEST!  For further information about classes, please CLICK HERE.

FIRST YEAR STUDENTS
ALL first year students should plan to attend the NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION PROGRAM whether they are planning to be commuters or resident students, attending Urban Education or arriving at WSC with a few credits already in place, since mandatory testing, course selection and opportunities to interact with your new classmates are all important components of our program.  Please be aware of these program notes:

PARENTS
Parents are encouraged to attend the NEW PARENT ORIENTATION PROGRAM that focuses on a variety of specific areas for both student and parent success including sessions on “Letting Go”, academic success, campus safety and much more!  Parent program notes:

How to Register For New Student and Parent Orientation 2008
Please CLICK HERE to find a New Student and Parent Orientation Registration form for you and your parents.  This form should be printed out and returned to our office as soon as possible for the best date selection.  Once you return your registration information to the Office of New Student Orientation, you will receive a confirmation with your arrival date, registration time and parking details. You should receive this within daysof the time you mail us your reservation form. If you do not, please call us at (413)572-5619 so we can check on the status of your reservation. 

Please CLICK HERE for your New Student Matriculation Information Form.  This form should be filled out with your family so that we have accurate communication information.  Please return this form with your registration materials to the Office of New Student Orientation.  Thank you!

Orientation is an OVERNIGHT program and all students are encouraged to stay in the halls.  If you cannot stay overnight, please check the appropriate box on your registration form and have a parent or guardian sign it.  As a new student, if you do not have this form signed prior to your arrival, we cannot let you leave the program.  Thank you.

What to Bring to Orientation:
$10 for your student ID (cash or check only, made out to WSC)
Academic paperwork or schedule (sent to you under separate mailing from the Division of Academic Affairs)
Pillow 
Blanket/Sleeping Bag (Parents attending should bring bed linens as well!!)
Sheets
Towel
Shower shoes
Shower caddy
Toiletries (soap, deodorant, toothbrush)
Comfortable clothes and shoes
A little extra cash for late night pizza or other snacks (We do not have change!)

What NOT to bring:
Guests, including non-registered family members
Alcohol
Drugs
Weapons of any kind

Please see the New Student and New Parent Orientation schedules for an overview of your orientation program.  We cover many topics throughout your time here while also providing an opportunity for you to interact with other students/parents and the orientation team.

Directions to New Student and Parent Orientation

Traveling interstate 91 to exit 9 Northbound or exit 8 Southbound (West Springfield/Westfield exit)
• Follow route 20 West.
• Continue approximately 6 miles to Westfield Center.
• Bear left around the rotary and take the first right onto Court St./Western Ave.
• WSC is located 4 miles on the right.  (Please park in the Commuter Lot and walk to Courtney hall, with your overnight items, to check-in!)  Please check the CAMPUS MAP for details.

Traveling Massachusetts Turnpike to exit 3 (Westfield)
• Bear right after tollgate onto Route 202.
• Continue approximately 2 miles to Intersection for route 20
• Take right at traffic light and continue on route 20 west (Franklin St) until you approach blinking yellow light.
• At light, turn left onto Lloyd’s Hill Road
• At top of hill, turn right onto Western Ave.
• WSC is located approximately 1 mile on right. (Please park in the Commuter Lot and walk to Courtney hall, with your overnight items, to check-in!)  Please check the CAMPUS MAP for details.
